10.3 — Gathering and Displaying Client Testimonials
Gathering and Displaying Client Testimonials
In the digital services market, Trust is the ultimate currency.
You can write the best Upwork proposal in the world, and have a beautiful website, but if a client doesn't trust you, they will not hand over their credit card.
The fastest way to build trust is through Social Proof (Testimonials). When a potential client sees that other business owners have successfully worked with you, their perceived risk drops to zero.
🛑 The Mistake of Waiting
Most beginners finish a project, deliver the files, say "Thank you," and hope the client magically decides to write a glowing review. They rarely do. Clients are busy.
You must take proactive control of your reputation. You must ask for the testimonial, and you must make it effortless for them to provide it.
✍️ The "Frictionless Ask" Strategy
If you email a client saying, "Can you please write a testimonial for my website?", they have to sit down, think of what to say, draft it, edit it, and send it. That is too much friction.
Instead, we use AI to Ghostwrite the testimonial for them. You write it, and they just approve it.
Step 1: The Claude Drafting Prompt
Once a project is successfully completed and the client is happy, open Claude 4.6.
Prompt:
Act as a high-end copywriter.
I just finished a project for my client [Client Name].
The project was: [e.g., migrating their database from WordPress to Shopify].
The result was: [e.g., 0 downtime, finished 2 days ahead of schedule, zero data loss].
I want you to draft 3 short, punchy, and highly professional testimonials written from the PERSPECTIVE of the client.
They should focus on my reliability, speed, and technical competence.
Keep each under 3 sentences.
Step 2: The Email Pitch
Send an email to the client using this exact framework:
"Hi [Client Name],
I am thrilled we got the migration launched ahead of schedule. It was a pleasure working with your team.
I am currently updating my professional portfolio. Would you be open to providing a brief testimonial regarding our work together? To save you time, I took the liberty of drafting a few options based on our results. Feel free to choose one, edit it, or write your own:
[Paste Option 1] [Paste Option 2]
Thank you again for the opportunity!"
📈 Displaying the Proof
Once they reply with "Yes, Option 1 is perfect!", you now have a verified asset.
Where does it go?
- Your 1-Page Portfolio: Put it directly under the Hero section.
- Your LinkedIn Profile: Put it in your 'Featured' section or ask them to officially post it as a "Recommendation" on your profile.
- Your Upwork Proposals: If you are pitching a new client for a database migration, include the quote at the bottom of your proposal: "Don't just take my word for it. Here is what the CEO of [Previous Company] said about my migration work: '[Paste Quote]'."
When you surround your brand with the voices of satisfied, high-status clients, your own status elevates automatically. Stop hoping for reviews; start architecting them.
Practice Lab
Exercise 1: Identify your last 3 completed projects. For each, draft a testimonial request email using this template: "Subject: Quick favor — testimonial request / Hi [Name], I really enjoyed working with you on [project]. If you have 3 minutes, would you be willing to write 2-3 sentences on [specific feedback page URL or Google My Business]? I'd love to feature your feedback. Thank you!" Send all 3 this week.
Exercise 2: If you have existing testimonials from clients in WhatsApp or email, copy-paste them and ask Claude 4.6: "Polish this into a professional 2-sentence testimonial while preserving the client's original sentiment." Use the polished version on your portfolio (with permission).
Exercise 3: Screenshot your best Upwork review. Add the client's name (first name only for privacy), their business type, and a 5-star visual. Create a branded testimonial card in Canva. Use this across your portfolio, LinkedIn, and proposal documents.
