8.1 — Claude vs. Gemini vs. ChatGPT
Creating Your Upwork and Fiverr Accounts
The first step to starting your freelance journey is opening your digital shop. If your shop doesn't look legitimate and professional, no customer will walk in.
The two most popular platforms globally are Upwork and Fiverr. In this lesson, we will cover how to set up accounts on both platforms and the critical mistakes you must avoid to prevent getting banned.
🛑 The Biggest Mistake: Fake Details
Many beginners think, "If I set my location to the USA and change my name to 'John', I will get more jobs." Never do this.
Both Upwork and Fiverr require Identity Verification via government-issued ID and a live Video Selfie. If your account name is John but your ID card says Ali, your account will be permanently banned immediately, and you will never be able to create another account from that device.
Always use your real name, a real picture of yourself, and your actual location.
🟢 Setting Up Fiverr (The Easy Way)
Fiverr operates like a digital catalog. You create a "Gig" (a packaged service), and clients come to your profile to purchase it directly.
- Sign Up: Go to Fiverr.com and click "Join". Use your Google account or a professional email address.
- Profile Picture: Upload a clear, smiling, professional photo of your face (do not wear sunglasses or hats).
- Description: Use AI to write it: "I need a Fiverr description for a graphic designer. Write it in simple, professional English. Max 3 sentences."
- Create a Gig: Build your first service package. Example: "I will design a modern logo for $10." (Keep your prices low initially to secure your first 5-star review quickly).
🔵 Setting Up Upwork (The Professional Way)
Upwork is slightly more complex because it operates on a bidding system. Clients post jobs, and you must "Apply" by sending a Proposal. The clients here generally have higher budgets.
- Sign Up: Go to Upwork.com and "Sign Up" as a Freelancer.
- Title: Do not write generic titles like "Data Entry Operator". Specify a niche. (Example: "Excel Automation Expert" or "Shopify CRM Architect").
- Profile Overview: Use the AI-generated profile overview we learned to craft in Module 1.1.
- Approval: Upwork does not approve every new account if there are too many freelancers with the same skill. If your account gets rejected, change your skills temporarily to something in higher demand (like Web Development or AI Integration) and resubmit. Once approved, you can change your skills back.
Action Item
Go to both platforms today and set up your basic profiles. Ensure your picture is clear and professional (avoid casual selfies; ask a friend to take a well-lit photo of you against a plain wall). Once your accounts are live, we will move on to the next step: how to actually receive your money!
Practice Lab
Exercise 1: Create your Upwork profile today (if you haven't). Fill in: Title (using the Value + Niche + Tool formula from Module 1), Overview (using the AI rewrite method from Module 1), and at least 3 portfolio items (even from personal projects or mockups). Take a screenshot when done.
Exercise 2: On Fiverr, create your first Gig. Use this title formula: "I will [specific outcome] for [specific client type] using [specific tool]." Example: "I will build an AI-powered customer support chatbot for Shopify stores using Claude API." Research what the top Fiverr gigs in your niche charge. Price yours 10-15% below the mid-tier competitor.
Exercise 3: Cross-link your Upwork and Fiverr profiles. In your Fiverr bio, mention your Upwork profile (and vice versa). In your LinkedIn, add both as "Experience." A client who finds you on one platform and sees you're established on two others trusts you more.
💡 Key Takeaways
- Your first Upwork contract matters more than your first payment — a 5-star review unlocks better clients.
- Fiverr's algorithm rewards new gigs with temporary boost — publish consistently in your first 30 days.
- Portfolio items (even mockups or self-initiated projects) are mandatory. An empty portfolio is the same as no application.
- Getting the first review is the hardest part. Consider doing one small project at a slight discount to get that first social proof.
- Two active platforms (Upwork + Fiverr) doubles your surface area for being discovered.
