Getting Paid in Pakistan (JazzCash & SadaPay)
You have created your account, landed a client, and completed the work. But now comes the most important question: The client is paying in US Dollars; how do I get PKR into my pocket?
In the past, opening an international bank account was difficult, but today, there are incredibly simple options available for freelancers in Pakistan.
🌉 The "Bridge": Payoneer
Upwork and Fiverr do not send money directly to your local Meezan or HBL bank account. They need a "Bridge." That bridge is Payoneer.
Payoneer is an international digital bank account that provides you with virtual US and UK bank details.
- Create a Payoneer Account: Go to Payoneer.com and sign up. You will need to upload your Pakistani ID card (CNIC) or Passport for verification.
- Link with Upwork/Fiverr: Go to your Upwork settings, navigate to "Get Paid," and click "Add Method" to link your new Payoneer account.
(Note: When creating a Payoneer account, you must link it to a local Pakistani bank account, whether it belongs to you or a parent).
💸 Dollars to PKR: The Easy Options
Once your dollars arrive in Payoneer, there are two simple ways to extract them:
Option 1: JazzCash (The Easiest Route)
If you do not have a traditional bank account, it is not a problem. Download the JazzCash app on your phone.
- Inside the JazzCash app, look for the "Payoneer" option.
- Link your Payoneer account from there.
- Whenever you have dollars in Payoneer, you can use the JazzCash app to instantly convert them to PKR and withdraw them directly to your JazzCash wallet. (The transfer usually takes less than a minute!)
Option 2: SadaPay / NayaPay (Recommended)
The best modern option for freelancers is SadaPay or NayaPay. These are digital banks that provide a free ATM card.
- Download the SadaPay app and create an account using your CNIC.
- SadaPay offers a "Freelancer Account" (SadaBiz) which also allows you to receive Apple Pay and Google Pay links directly, bypassing Upwork's fees for direct clients.
- Their exchange rate is typically much better than traditional banks.
🛑 Important Rule (Platform Fees)
Both Upwork and Fiverr charge a fee when you withdraw your money.
- Upwork: Takes a flat 10% fee on every project. (If the client pays $100, you get $90).
- Payoneer: When you transfer money from Payoneer to Pakistan, they take an additional 2% conversion fee.
When you are quoting a price to a client, always factor in these fees to ensure your take-home pay is accurate!
Action Item: If you do not already have JazzCash or SadaPay, download one of them today and set it up using your CNIC. Once approved, create your Payoneer account and link them together.
Practice Lab
Exercise 1: Open a SadaPay account today (CNIC + phone number, 5 minutes). Then connect it to Upwork as your withdrawal method. Make a test withdrawal of whatever balance you have (even $1) to confirm the pipeline works before your first big payout.
Exercise 2: Research the current USD-PKR exchange rate and the fees for: (a) Upwork's withdrawal to SadaPay, (b) Payoneer's withdrawal to bank, (c) Wise transfer to local bank. Create a simple comparison table. Use whichever gives you the best net rate for your monthly payout amount.
Exercise 3: Track every payment you receive for 30 days. Log: gross amount in USD, platform fee (%), exchange rate applied, net received in PKR. At the end of 30 days, you'll know exactly what your effective dollar rate is. This is your real income number.
💡 Key Takeaways
- SadaPay is currently one of the fastest and cheapest USD withdrawal options for Pakistani freelancers.
- Always compare exchange rates on payout day — rates fluctuate by Rs 2-5 per dollar and compound significantly at scale.
- Platform fees (Upwork takes 10% on first $500 per client, then 5%) are a cost of doing business — factor them into your pricing.
- Never keep large USD balances on Upwork unnecessarily — rates change and platforms can restrict accounts.
- Financial literacy is a competitive advantage. Most freelancers ignore fees and lose 5-10% of their income.
