6.2 — Local Citation Building & NAP Consistency
Local Citation Building & NAP Consistency
Google doesn't just look at your website to rank you locally — it looks at how consistently your business appears across the entire internet. Every directory, every listing, every mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) is a signal. Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt your rankings. This lesson teaches you how to build citations and maintain NAP consistency for Pakistani businesses.
What Are Citations?
A citation is any online mention of your business that includes
your Name, Address, and/or Phone number (NAP).
STRUCTURED CITATIONS (directory listings):
├── Google Business Profile
├── Bing Places
├── Yelp
├── Yellow Pages Pakistan
├── Foursquare
└── Industry-specific directories
UNSTRUCTURED CITATIONS (mentions without a listing):
├── Blog posts mentioning your business
├── News articles
├── Social media profiles
├── Forum posts
└── Event pages
NAP Consistency — Why It Matters
The Consistency Problem
INCONSISTENT NAP (confuses Google):
Google Business: "Ahmed's Restaurant, Block 5 Clifton, Karachi, 75600"
Facebook: "Ahmed Restaurant, Clifton Block 5, Karachi"
Yelp: "Ahmeds Restaurant, Near Boat Basin, Clifton, KHI"
Yellow Pages: "Ahmed's Restaurant & Cafe, Block-5, Clifton, Karachi 75600"
Website footer: "Ahmed's Restaurant, Clifton, Karachi"
Google sees 5 different versions → "Is this even the same business?"
→ Lower confidence → Lower rankings
CONSISTENT NAP (Google trusts you):
Everywhere: "Ahmed's Restaurant, Block 5, Clifton, Karachi 75600"
+92-21-35831234
→ Google confirms → Higher confidence → Higher rankings
The NAP Format Standard
Pick ONE format and use it everywhere:
BUSINESS NAME: [Exact legal/brand name — no extra keywords]
✅ Ahmed's Restaurant
❌ Ahmed's Restaurant — Best Biryani in Karachi (keyword stuffing)
ADDRESS: [Full, formatted consistently]
✅ Shop 12, Block 5, Clifton, Karachi 75600
❌ Block 5 Clifton KHI (inconsistent abbreviation)
PHONE: [One primary number in consistent format]
✅ +92-21-35831234
❌ 021-35831234 (missing country code)
❌ 0213-583-1234 (different formatting)
WEBSITE: [Include www or not — but be consistent]
✅ https://www.ahmeds.pk (everywhere)
❌ ahmeds.pk (some places) and www.ahmeds.pk (other places)

The Citation Building Process
Step 1: Audit Existing Citations
AI Citation Audit Prompt:
Search for the following business across the internet and identify
all existing citations (directory listings, social profiles, mentions):
Business: [Name]
Phone: [Number]
Address: [Address]
City: [City]
For each citation found, note:
1. Source/website
2. NAP as it appears (exact text)
3. Is it consistent with the master NAP? (yes/no)
4. Any additional info (hours, categories, photos)
5. Can it be edited? (claimed vs unclaimed)
Focus on Pakistani directories and international directories
that serve Pakistan.
Step 2: Fix Inconsistencies First
Before building new citations, fix existing ones:
CITATION CLEANUP CHECKLIST:
□ Google Business Profile — NAP matches master format
□ Facebook — address, phone, name all consistent
□ Website footer — exact NAP match
□ Website contact page — exact NAP match
□ Any existing directory listings — claim and update
□ Social media profiles (Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn) — all consistent
Common Pakistan-specific issues:
□ Multiple phone numbers listed (pick ONE primary)
□ Address in Urdu on some listings, English on others (pick one language)
□ Old address from before the business moved
□ Different business name variations (with "& Co" or without)
Step 3: Build New Citations (Systematic)
WEEK 1: Tier 1 (Essential — 5 citations)
- Google Business Profile (if not already set up)
- Bing Places
- Facebook Business Page
- Apple Maps
- Yelp
WEEK 2: Tier 2 (Pakistan-Specific — 5-8 citations)
- Pakistani business directories
- Industry-specific directories relevant to the business
WEEK 3: Tier 3 (International — 5-8 citations)
- Global directories
- Review platforms
WEEK 4: Tier 4 (Industry-Specific — 3-5 citations)
- Niche directories for the specific business type
TOTAL: 18-26 citations in 4 weeks
Speed: 3-5 citations per session (don't rush)
Step 4: Citation Submission Template
For each directory, you'll need:
REQUIRED (always have these ready):
- Business name (exact)
- Address (full, formatted)
- Phone (with country code)
- Website URL
- Business description (150-300 words)
- Categories (primary + 2-3 secondary)
- Business hours
- Email address
RECOMMENDED:
- Logo (high-res PNG, square)
- Cover photo (landscape)
- 5-10 interior/exterior photos
- Payment methods accepted
- Year established
- Owner name
AI Business Description Generator
Write a business description for a local citation/directory listing.
Business: [Name]
Type: [Restaurant / Clinic / Agency / etc.]
Location: [City, Area]
Services: [Main services]
Unique selling point: [What makes them different]
Requirements:
- 200-250 words
- Include location naturally (not keyword stuffed)
- Mention 3-4 key services
- Include a call to action
- Professional tone
- Do NOT repeat the business name more than twice
- Include the full address at the end
Citation Management
Monthly Citation Audit
MONTHLY CHECKLIST (30 minutes):
□ Google "Business Name + City" — check top 10 results for NAP issues
□ Google the phone number — check all listings that appear
□ Check Google Business Profile for suggested edits (reject incorrect ones)
□ Verify 5 random citations are still live and accurate
□ Look for duplicate listings (same business, different entry)
□ Check for unauthorized changes (competitors sometimes edit listings)
Handling Duplicate Listings
DUPLICATE DETECTION:
Google "[Business Name]" + "[Phone Number]"
If you see the same business listed twice on one platform → duplicate
REMOVAL PROCESS:
1. Google Business: Report duplicate → "Suggest an edit" → "Remove"
2. Yelp: Contact Yelp support with both listing URLs
3. Facebook: Report the duplicate page
4. Other directories: Contact support directly
Keep the listing with more reviews/history. Remove the newer/emptier one.
Practice Lab
Task 1: NAP Audit Pick a real local business (your own or a client's). Search for all existing citations. Create a spreadsheet: Source | Name as listed | Address as listed | Phone as listed | Consistent? (Y/N). Count how many inconsistencies exist.
Task 2: Build 10 Citations Using the systematic process, build 10 citations for a business across Tier 1 and Tier 2 sources. Ensure perfect NAP consistency on all 10. Screenshot each completed listing.
Task 3: Create a Citation Package Package this as a service you can sell: "Local Citation Building — 20 Citations + NAP Audit." Write a one-page service description with pricing (suggest PKR 15,000-25,000 for 20 citations + audit).
Pakistan Case Study
Meet Dr. Amir — runs a dental clinic in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi.
His local SEO problem: Google Business Profile was set up but he wasn't appearing in the "map pack" (top 3 local results) for "dentist in Gulshan-e-Iqbal." Competitors with fewer reviews were outranking him.
NAP audit findings:
- Google Business: "Dr. Amir's Dental Clinic, Block 13-A, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi 75300"
- Facebook: "Amir Dental Clinic, Gulshan e Iqbal, Karachi"
- Marham.pk: "Dr. Amir Dental, Block 13, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, KHI"
- Website: "Dr. Amir's Dental Clinic & Implant Center, Karachi"
- No other citations existed
4 versions of the same business name. Address format inconsistent. Missing from all Pakistani and international directories.
His citation building campaign:
Week 1: Fixed all 4 existing citations to match master NAP Week 2: Built 8 citations (Tier 1 + Pakistan medical directories: Marham, oladoc, Healthwire) Week 3: Built 6 more citations (international directories) Week 4: Built 4 more citations (industry-specific dental directories)
Total: 18 new citations + 4 fixed = 22 consistent citations
Results over 3 months:
- Google Map Pack appearance: position 7 → position 2 for "dentist Gulshan-e-Iqbal"
- Google Maps "discovery" searches: 340/month → 890/month
- Direction requests: 45/month → 112/month
- Phone calls from Google: 28/month → 67/month
- New patients attributed to Google: 8/month → 22/month
- Revenue increase: approximately PKR 180,000/month in new patient revenue
Investment: PKR 0 (all directories were free) + 8 hours of time over 4 weeks.
