Salary Negotiation Scripts for the Pakistani and Remote Market

Salary negotiation is a conversation about evidence, scope, and the complete offer—not a contest to name the boldest number. Your strongest position is a current range built from comparable roles and a calm explanation of why your experience fits it.

By the end, you will have a dated salary range, offer-comparison table, and four scripts you can adapt without inventing another offer or exposing private information.

// concept

Build a Dated Salary Evidence Range

Do not ask an AI model, “What should a marketing executive in Lahore earn?” It can return stale, foreign, or fabricated figures. Build the range from evidence you can open yourself.

Collect at least five comparable records where possible. Start with current advertisements on employer career pages, LinkedIn Jobs, and ROZEE.PK. Add written recruiter ranges. Match actual duties, seniority, location, employment type, and date; a Karachi onsite manager and a remote UK contractor are not one comparison group.

Use this sheet; leave a salary cell blank when the source gives no number.

Separate these values:

  • Walk-away floor: the minimum complete offer you can accept, based on your budget and alternatives—not AI.
  • Evidence range: the overlap in recent, comparable records, with outliers kept visible.
  • Anchor: a defensible request supported by the evidence and your verified fit, not automatically the highest number found.

AI may organize your notes, but tell it not to supply missing figures:

// prompt — copy me8 lines
Using only the salary evidence inside <records>, group comparable roles by
seniority, location, and employee/contractor status. Do not estimate or add
salary figures. Show: source, date checked, stated range, differences in scope,
and unanswered questions. If the records are too different to support one
range, say so and tell me what evidence I still need.

Set an Honest Anchor and Compare the Whole Offer

An anchor is the first supported target in the conversation. If the employer shares a budgeted band first, work from it. Otherwise state your researched range, identify it as base or total compensation, and leave room to discuss the package.

Compare offers in the same currency and time period. A USD contractor amount is not equivalent to a PKR employee salary after a quick conversion. Fill this formula using the provider’s current quoted rate and the contract:

// prompt — copy me6 lines
Comparable monthly value = guaranteed monthly cash
                         + employer-paid benefits you would otherwise buy
                         + value of paid leave, if applicable
                         - worker-paid transfer/withdrawal fees
                         - equipment or insurance you must fund
                         - tax amount confirmed for your own circumstances

For a remote offer, clarify whether you will be an employee or independent contractor; this affects benefits, leave, equipment, invoicing, taxes, and termination. Confirm currency, schedule, payment rail, fees, exchange-rate method, working-hour overlap, and notice. Provider availability and Pakistani tax or foreign-exchange rules change: verify them with the provider, receiving bank, FBR, and SBP before signing. This is not legal or tax advice.

Four Scripts You Can Adapt

Replace every brace with your evidence, then speak the script aloud once.

1. Deflect “What is your current salary?” without lying

// prompt — copy me6 lines
Recruiter: What are you earning in your current role?

You: I’d prefer to base this move on the responsibilities and the budget for
this position rather than my previous package. For roles with this scope, my
current research supports {your researched range} in {currency and period}.
Could you share the approved range for the role?

If an application form makes the field mandatory, never enter a false amount. Decide whether to disclose the truthful figure, ask the recruiter how to proceed, or withdraw.

2. Counter a low offer

// prompt — copy me5 lines
You: Thank you for the offer. I’m interested in the role. Based on the stated
scope—{two specific responsibilities}—and my evidence in {two verified skills
or results}, I was targeting {anchor} as base salary. Is there flexibility to
move the base to {counter}? If the base is fixed, could we discuss {one relevant
benefit, review date, or paid-leave term} in writing?

3. Ask for time to review

// prompt — copy me3 lines
You: Thank you. I’d like to review the complete written offer, including base,
benefits, employment type, probation, notice, working hours, and payment terms.
May I respond by {specific date and time}? I’ll send any questions together.

4. Accept after the terms are written

// prompt — copy me4 lines
You: I’m pleased to accept the {role title} offer at {base and currency/period},
subject to the written terms we agreed: {employment type}, {start date},
{benefits or contractor terms}, and {payment schedule}. Please send the final
agreement for signature. Thank you—I’m looking forward to joining the team.

// worked_example

Worked Example

Sample scenario—not market-rate evidence: A Lahore junior data analyst receives a local offer. Five dated, comparable records support the anchor; figures remain placeholders so this cannot be mistaken for a current salary survey.

Their first draft says, “I deserve more because remote companies pay in dollars.” It provides no role evidence and compares foreign contractor pay with a local employee package.

They use this better version:

// prompt — copy me6 lines
Thank you for the offer. I’m keen on the analyst role. The job includes dashboard
ownership and weekly stakeholder reporting, and my portfolio shows both in two
verified projects. Three comparable Lahore employee roles checked this week
place my target at {evidence-based anchor} base. Could you move the offer to
{counter}? If the base cannot move, could we put a six-month compensation review
against agreed dashboard and reporting responsibilities into the offer?

The employer says the base is fixed but offers a review. The candidate asks for the timing, decision-maker, criteria, and possible outcome in writing. They take one day, compare the offer with their floor, then accept or decline. The fix replaces a vague foreign-market claim with dated local evidence, verified fit, one counter, and a written alternative.

Failure Cases to Diagnose

6 cases to diagnose

  • Your range mixes unlike roles.

    “Marketing” records span interns, executives, and managers. Filter by duties and seniority before calculating anything.

  • The source has no date or link.

    You cannot recheck it during negotiation. Record the URL, date viewed, currency, and monthly/annual basis.

  • You bluff another offer.

    The claim can be challenged and damages trust. Refer only to a real written offer, or anchor on market and role evidence.

  • You negotiate only the headline base.

    For remote work, missing fee, leave, equipment, tax, or termination terms can change the comparison. Complete the offer table first.

  • Your counter is an ultimatum.

    “Match this or I walk” closes options. State interest, evidence, a clear request, then pause.

  • A verbal concession never reaches the contract.

    Ask for the final base, review terms, benefits, currency, and payment schedule in writing before accepting.

Pakistan Angle

For a Pakistani local role, record whether the PKR amount is monthly base, gross, or take-home; applicable deductions; and written provident fund, medical, transport, bonus, or leave terms. Read the offer instead of assuming a Lahore or Karachi norm. Date-stamp evidence from ROZEE.PK, LinkedIn, employer pages, and recruiters.

For remote USD work from Pakistan, verify the payment rail before treating the offer as usable. Ask your bank or provider whether the route currently supports your account, what documentation it needs, which exchange rate applies, when funds arrive, and who pays fees. Check current FBR tax guidance and SBP foreign-exchange instructions for your circumstances. Never paste a CNIC image, bank details, home address, tax identifier, or an unredacted offer letter into an AI chat.

// hands_on

Hands-On Exercise

5 steps

Build your personal negotiation script sheet for one real target role.

  1. Collect five current comparable records; save each URL, date, scope, employment type, currency, period, and disclosed range.

  2. Mark each record strong, partial, or poor match. Use only strong matches to propose an evidence range; if fewer than three disclose pay, list the recruiter questions you need instead of manufacturing a range.

  3. Write your walk-away floor privately and your evidence-based anchor separately.

  4. Complete the whole-offer formula for a local employee version and a remote contractor version using placeholders where the contract is unknown.

  5. Fill all four scripts with your role, evidence, counter, review deadline, and acceptance terms. Read them aloud and remove any sentence you cannot verify.
